# How to add custom fields to contacts

CRM · about 2 min · updated Aug 2026

Every business tracks something the standard fields don't cover — an account number, a referral source, a renewal date, a T-shirt size. In Stacks you can add your own **custom fields** to contacts in a few seconds. Once you create one, it shows up on every contact's form and detail page automatically. It's unlimited and free.

## Before you start

- Custom fields are managed under **Settings**, which is **admin-only** — you'll need an account with admin access to add or remove them.
- They're **unlimited and free** on every plan. There's no cap and no upgrade to unlock them.
- You can attach fields to **Contacts, Companies or Deals** from the same screen — this guide walks through Contacts.

## Step by step

1. **Open Settings, then Custom Fields.** In the left menu, go to **Settings** and open **Custom Fields**. You'll see an *Add a Field* form at the top, and your existing fields listed below, grouped by record type (Contacts, Companies, Deals).
2. **Choose what it applies to.** Set **Applies To** to **Contacts**. (The same form can add fields to Companies or Deals — each record type keeps its own set.)
3. **Name it and pick a type.** Enter a **Field Label** — for example *Account Number* (up to 100 characters) — and choose a **Type**: Text, Number, Date, Dropdown, Checkbox or Currency.
4. **Add options or make it required.** If you chose **Dropdown**, a *Dropdown Options* box appears — type your choices **one per line** (a dropdown needs at least one). Tick **Required field** if it must be filled in whenever a contact is saved — that toggle is always optional.
5. **Click Add Field.** Your field is saved right away. It now appears in a **Custom Fields** section on every contact's add and edit form — and on the contact's detail page as soon as it has a value.

💡

Custom fields and manual import mappings are free. Optional AI column matching uses workspace credits.

## Field types you can create

- **Text** — any short line of text (names, IDs, notes).
- **Number** — plain numeric values.
- **Currency** — a money amount, shown with two decimals on the detail page.
- **Date** — a calendar date picker.
- **Dropdown** — a pick-one list you define, one option per line.
- **Checkbox** — a simple yes/no toggle.

## Good to know

- **Where it shows up.** Every field appears on the contact's add/edit form. On the detail page, the *Custom Fields* card only lists fields that actually have a value, so empty ones don't clutter the view.
- **Blank clears it.** On the edit form, clearing a custom field's value and saving **removes** that value from the contact.
- **No in-place editing yet.** To change a field's label, type or dropdown options, **delete it and create a new one**. Deleting a field also removes every value saved in it, so you're asked to confirm first.
- **Fields are per record type.** A field you add to Contacts isn't automatically on Companies or Deals — add it separately for each.
- **Works with CSV import.** When you import contacts from a CSV, you can map a column onto an existing custom field, or create a brand-new text field straight from the importer. Imported values are additive — a blank cell won't wipe an existing value.

## Frequently asked

What field types can I create?

Text, Number, Date, Dropdown (pick one from a list you define), Checkbox (a yes/no toggle) and Currency. For a dropdown you set your own options, one per line.

Can I add custom fields to companies and deals too?

Yes. The same **Settings → Custom Fields** screen lets you attach fields to Contacts, Companies or Deals — just change **Applies To**. Each record type keeps its own separate set of fields.

Can I edit a field after I create it?

There's no in-place editor yet. To change a field's label, type or options, delete it and add a new one. Because deleting also clears the values stored in that field, Stacks asks you to confirm first.
