# How to export your contacts from Stacks

CRM · about 2 min · updated Aug 2026

Your contacts are yours. Whenever you want a copy — for a backup, an accountant, a mail-merge, or to move data into another tool — Stacks can prepare a CSV of your contact details. Standard downloads need no export fee or support ticket. This is a contact export; it is not a complete workspace backup.

## Before you start

- Exporting is an **admin** or **manager** action. If you're a team member or a view-only user, you won't see the Export button — ask an admin or manager to run it for you.
- You'll get a **CSV file** — the universal spreadsheet format that opens in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers, and imports into virtually any other tool.
- Nothing else to set up: exporting is **free on every plan**, with the same technical download limits on every plan.

## Step by step

1. **Open your contacts.** In Stacks, click **Contacts** in the left menu to open your contact list.
2. **Click Export CSV.** In the toolbar at the top-right of the list — next to **Import CSV** and **+ New Contact** — click **Export CSV**.
3. **Save the file.** Your browser downloads a file named **contacts_YYYY-MM-DD.csv** (today's date), containing every contact in your account.
4. **Open it anywhere.** Double-click to open it in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers — or upload it straight into whatever tool you're moving to.

💡

**Exporting is completely free.** Unlike some tools that lock your data behind an upgrade, Stacks includes contact CSV export on every plan. There is no **AI Pro**-only export tier. Technical download limits apply equally to all plans.

## Good to know

- **What's in the file.** Each row is one contact, with these columns: *Contact ID, Company ID, First Name, Last Name, Email, Phone, Job Title, Company, City, State, Source, Status, Created*, and *Updated*.
- **List filters do not apply.** The export reads your account's contacts up to the record ID present when it starts. It does not create a transactionally consistent snapshot while other people are editing records.
- **Company links are identifiable.** The *Company ID* and *Company* columns identify an account-owned linked company. Full company records are not included; authorized integrations can retrieve them through the companies API.
- **Download limits.** A CSV may contain up to 50,000 rows and 64 MiB. Larger requests fail with an explanation rather than returning a truncated file. Authorized integrations can page through supported records using the API; there is no background full-backup job.
- **It's recorded.** Every export is written to your **audit log** along with the number of contacts, to record who requested it and when.

Cells that could be interpreted as spreadsheet formulas receive a leading apostrophe. Preserve that text treatment when opening the file in a spreadsheet; use the JSON API for exact machine-readable values.

## Frequently asked

Who's allowed to export contacts?

Admins and managers. Regular team members and view-only users don't see the **Export CSV** button — this keeps a full copy of your customer list behind the more trusted roles.

Can I export just a filtered or searched view?

Not through this button. On-screen filters do not narrow the CSV. The download limits above still apply; API pagination supports larger contact lists.

Does the file include deals, notes or invoices?

No. It includes the contact columns listed above. Deals, notes, invoices, custom-field definitions and values, files, and history are not included. A complete workspace backup is not available through this download.
