How to get paid online with payment links
Sometimes you don't need a full invoice — you just need to get paid. A Stacks payment link is a single shareable link that collects a fixed amount: a deposit, a service, a product. Send it by text or email, your customer pays by card, and the money lands directly in your own Stripe account. One link can be reused by as many people as you like.
Before you start
- You'll bring your own Stripe account — that's where the money goes. An admin connects it once under Settings → Payments (you'll paste your Stripe secret and publishable keys).
- Payment links live in the Invoicing module, alongside your invoices.
- To create a link you'll need permission to create invoices — admins, managers and team members have it by default (only view-only users don't).
Step by step
- Connect your Stripe account. An admin opens Settings → Payments and pastes your Stripe secret and publishable keys. Until Stripe is connected, Stacks shows a warning on your links and customers can't pay — so do this first. You only set it up once.
- Open Payment Links. Go to Invoicing → Payment Links and click + New Payment Link.
- Create the link. Give it a Title (e.g. "Deposit for kitchen remodel"), enter an Amount and pick a Currency. A Description is optional. Prefer to start from something you already sell? Choose a catalog item and Stacks fills in the name and price for you — you can still edit them. Click Create link.
- Copy and share the link. Stacks takes you to the link's page and shows its shareable URL. Hit Copy and paste it into a text, email or chat — or click Open ↗ to preview the payment page yourself.
- Get paid. Your customer opens a clean, branded page with your business name and the amount, taps Pay, and checks out securely on Stripe. The payment appears under the link with a running Collected total, and Stripe emails your customer a receipt automatically.
💡
It's free — and Stacks never touches your money. Payment links are included on every plan at no cost. Because you connect your own Stripe, funds go straight to your account and Stacks charges no per-transaction fee — you only pay Stripe's standard processing rates.
Good to know
- One link, many payments. A payment link is reusable — perfect for a standard deposit or a product everyone pays the same for. Every payment is tracked separately under the link.
- Prices are locked in when you create the link. The title and amount are a snapshot, so editing a catalog item later never changes a link a customer is already looking at.
- Turn a link off anytime. Deactivate a link and its page stops accepting payments (customers see a friendly "no longer active" note). Reactivate it whenever you want.
- Paid links are protected. Once a link has taken a payment it can't be deleted — only deactivated — so your money history stays intact. Links with no payments can still be deleted.
- Cards, in 10 currencies. Customers pay by credit or debit card, in USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, JPY, INR, CHF, MXN or BRL.
- Every payment is on the record. The payer's name, email, amount and date show up under the link and in your activity log.
Frequently asked
Does Stacks take a cut of my payments?
No. Payments go straight into your own connected Stripe account. Stacks charges no fee on top — you only pay Stripe's standard processing rates.
How do customers actually pay?
Customers pay through Stripe hosted checkout. Check payment status in Stacks and your Stripe account. Provider receipt emails depend on your Stripe configuration.
Can the same link be paid more than once?
Yes — a payment link is reusable, so you can send one link to many people. Each payment is recorded on its own under the link. To stop taking payments, just deactivate it.
